Start with the number of pieces, since the differences between models are significant. A three-piece set generally includes the top, the skirt and one accessory — tie, bow or mitts. Two-piece models are limited to the top and skirt. Stockings, over-knee socks and shoes are almost never included, even though they’re shown in every photo.
The skirt determines the overall look. A pleated plaid skirt remains the most recognizable marker of the theme; plain versions go more unnoticed and are easier to reuse. Length should be chosen based on context: a costume party in public doesn’t call for the same cut as private use.
Check the available sizing. Many models are sold in one size, 36-40, which effectively excludes some body shapes. When a range is offered, trust the bust and hip measurements in centimetres rather than the letter: these costumes generally run small.
The material stays basic, nylon or polyester, which makes sense for an occasionally worn outfit. Above all, check for adjustable straps: they make up for most sizing approximations.
