The real obstacle in this category isn’t style, it’s sizing. Lingerie charts rarely follow ready-to-wear ones and imported models frequently run one to two sizes smaller than French standards. An M at one brand matches an L at another. Trust the measurements in centimetres given on the product page, never the letter shown.

The margin for error varies a lot by piece. An underwired bra forgives nothing: badly sized, it becomes painful within minutes. By contrast, anything built on adjustable straps or stretch fabric accepts a comfortable margin. That’s what makes some pieces much safer to give as a gift than others.

Material then decides real comfort. Lace dresses you up but scratches if it’s stiff. Satin drapes beautifully and creases at the slightest fold. Viscose and cotton are the only fabrics that hold up to extended wear without a second thought.

What’s left is how it’s used. A statement piece is worn for one evening, an everyday piece is worn without thinking about it: the two aren’t judged by the same criteria and confusing them is the most common mistake.
